Kalyn

If you're dedicated and really want to get good stick with one. Trying to learn both is cool if you wanna slide back and forth but it may be much more difficult.

1) The necks are different. Different number of frets, bigger frets on bass. Your hand might have trouble adjusting back and forth.

2) Strings are different. Guitar, 6. Bass, 4. That can get in the way.

3) If you are looking for real shredding or "sick" licks (depending on what genre you prefer) I'd stick with guitar. I mean it's not that you can't shred on bass like John Entwistle or Mike Gordon but usually you will be playing single notes with maybe some fills.

THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS. Just because they are both made of wood and both have frets and strings doesn't mean anything.

Genie

their two different instruments rach, just remember that. they have a few things in common though, and you can use that to your advantage in learning both instruments. some are obvious.

in standard tuning, a 4 string bass is E (lowest string), A, D, G (highest string). a six string guitar is E (lowest string), A,D,G,B,and e (highest string). this is basic stuff you probably know. but think of it this way... mandolins and violins, properly tuned, the strings are tuned to GDAE, G being the lowest. it'd be a lot harder to learn both instruments if the bass had a different tuning like GDAE.

you can learning 6 string and bass guitar at the same time. the tuning and fret board is what will help you grasp the knowledge of how to play both instruments.

if you want to learn both, practice both. cuz they are played differently. picking may be similar, but you don't normally strum a bass guitar. and plucking bass strings isn't done the same as finger picking a 6 string.

if you have a preference (bass or 6 string), i would advise getting a bigger amplifier for the guitar you have a bigger interest in. the bigger the amp, the better you hear your instrument.

Lloyd

yeah
if i was in your position i would start on guitar.
but you said not to say that so..
try to focus on guitar more than bass
then bass will be a LOT easier.
like with me
i play guitar only but i can take a bass and play whatever.
so yeah.
focusing on guitar more would probably be a better idea

Washington

Well learning guitar first would make Bass seem alot easier. Do whatever you feel is best for you. I would try to learn one before the other though,
