Fender for Sale

I was recently teaching a guitar class when a student mentioned that he had an old Fender electric guitar  in his possesion that was originally purchased by his grandfather. He wasn’t sure if it was valuable or not but was wondering if he could bring it in next class and show it to me. Of course, an old Fender guitar is always something of interest, so I told him to bring it along next class and I would take a look at it.

Well, next class the student shows up with an old Fender guitar case. So before I got the class going, I just had to have a look.

So, what do you guess? Yes, exactly. A 1958 Fender Les Paul in mint condition. Needless to say, I informed him that this was a valuable guitar and not to sell it lightly. Beautiful site to see.

Reminds me of an old Randy Bachman story. In the early Guess Who days, he came across a guy in band who was totally looped at the time and was willing to part with his old Strat or something like that. Well, Randy bought the guitar but made the guy sign a release that he honestly wanted to sell the guitar. Didn’t want the guy coming after him a few months later when he realized he sold his vintage guitar for a $100 so he could buy more beer.

Probably a good policy when buying vintage guitars.

Up for auction this week in the store is Oliver Leibers 1959 Gibson Les Paul Custom Guitar . Oliver Leiber is an L.A. based producer , songwriter , guitarist and huge gear collector ! Vintage Guitar magazine recently did a article on Olivers vast guitar / amp collection. The guitar is all original. Previously owned by Dave Amato of REO Speedwagon.

With the recent passing of Les Paul the prices of these guitars, although expensive now, will probably go through the roof.
